On December 4, 1937, the family of Max Baer and Mary Ellen Sullivan welcomed a son, Max Baer Jr., of German, Jewish, and Scottish-Irish descent. He was born in Oakland, California, USA, the eldest of three children including James Manny Baer and Maude Baer.
Baer Jr was raised in a family he is famous for boxing as his father Max Baer Sr was a World Heavyweight Champion whose career boasted a 63-13 win-loss record. Additionally, his uncle Buddy Baer was also a boxer, although he also happened to be an actor.
Baer Jr. received his education in Sacramento from the Christian Brothers High School. While there he was so good with sports that he got letters in four different sports. He was particularly good at golf, twice winning the junior title at the Sacramento Open golf tournament. He later went to Santa Clara University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a minor in philosophy.
Following in the footsteps of his uncle Buddy Baer, who had been an actor since 1937, Baer Jr. began his acting career in 1960 when he appeared on the ABC television series Loners in which he appeared in three episodes.
Also in 1960, he appeared in a few more ABC television series, including Surfside 6 – in the role of Joe Wilk, Cheyenne – in which he portrayed three characters, Hawaiian Eye – in which he played Ali and Bill Gorham, and then 77 Sunset Strip in which he again took over three roles. In 1961 he was in Bronco and Sugar Foot before appearing in the episode The Sun and It’s a Men’s World in 1962.
That same year, he landed his most popular role on the CBS sitcom television series, Beverly Hillbillies, in which he played Jethro Bodine. The show ran until 1971 but remained the role Max was associated with for many years. Ironically, he didn’t appear for the role of Jethro himself. Instead, he drove a friend who wanted to audition for the role and he decided to give it a try too.

His other relationships didn’t end well either. He dated Victoria Principal but the relationship ended in an attack on him. Many years later, his girlfriend Chere Rhodes committed suicide at his home. Rhodes, a penthouse model, died three days after the attempt.
